Why Are So Many Of Us Secretly Unhappy?


Nonchalance about personal health. Severely overreacting. Switches in behavior. These are just some of things people do when they’re secretly unhappy.  Personal health and happiness are two things that seem to be secondary in adulthood. You’d want to exercise but you’re exhausted when you get in from work. You’d love to eat a healthy breakfast but you only have so many minutes to get ready in the morning. I've learned there are certain traits and habits chronically unhappy people seem to have mastered. We all have bad days, even weeks. The difference between a happy and unhappy life is how often and how long we stay there.

A lack of time seems to be at the very core of all our problems. But living a happy and healthy life shouldn’t be something for which you have to “make time”. It should be an integral part of your daily routine. You shouldn’t put life first and yourself second.

  • Comparison To Others

Everyone has different circumstances in life. Everyone starts at their own point in life and has their own journey towards success.

So always getting in the habit of comparing yourself with others will put you in a state of consistent discontent. You might be comparing the strength of another person with your weaknesses, which is a game, you can never win.

  • Holding A Grudge

Anytime you hold a grudge, the only person that is affected is you. Your target usually has no idea what hateful thoughts you’re throwing at them. Meanwhile, in the real world, you’re unhappy, angry and frustrated and it’s affecting every aspect of your life in a negative way. What are you really gaining?

  • Body Confidence Issues

    Most of us are self-conscious about our bodies. For many women, it’s their skin that gives them confidence issues. We’re told that blemishes are a part of teenage life but, for most of us, those blemishes remain throughout our adult years. 

  • Envy A.K.A (BADMIND)

    The 10 Commandments warned against coveting anything your neighbor owned. It’s about protecting against envy for anything in your immediate space (Mental or Physical).

  • You Are Stuck In Your Comfort Zone

One of the most common reasons for lack of happiness in people’s lives is lack of growth.

At a certain point of time, people get stuck in their comfort zone.

Most of us try to always play very safe in our lives. And we very smartly keep on hiding this besides the facade of phrasing it “practical”.

  • You believe most people can't be trusted.

    I won't argue that healthy discernment is important, but most happy people are trusting of their fellow man. They believe in the good in people, versus assuming everyone is out to get them.

  • You are always in Past or Future.

    It is generally reported that human mind runs around 60,000 thoughts per day and more than 95% of those are the repeated thoughts.

    People either are thinking of their past, because this is something, which they have already seen and certain about.

    Otherwise, people keep on thinking about their future.

    This whole focus on past and present makes you stuck in the present moment. You are not able to take any action or get pressured with indecision. If you don’t move any further, that becomes the key reason for your unhappiness.
